Start with the record
SACDA describes the first of two volumes of a Vancouver Khalsa Diwan Society diary, covering 1906–1924 and recorded by secretary Arjan Singh Brar, also known as Chand. The catalogue identifies an English translation held by Simon Fraser University Library.[1]
A minute book can show recorded decisions, officeholders and agendas. Use the catalogue to identify the item, consult the translation when interpreting an entry, and compare the original where possible.[2]
Follow a particular meeting
An English translation of the Hindostan Swaraj Sabha of Canada minute book records a meeting on 14 January 1921 at the Vancouver gurdwara, held under the patronage of the Khalsa Diwan Society. It names proposed officers and describes a committee to prepare rules. This is evidence of a recorded meeting and organisational activity, not proof that everyone connected with the gurdwara agreed with its aims. The translated text should be compared with the original where possible, especially when the exact wording or a person’s name matters.[2]
Connect decisions to migration
A biography by historian Hugh Johnston adds an individual perspective to the organisational record. He describes how Harnam Kaur and Kartar Kaur arrived in Vancouver with their families in 1912, were initially ordered deported, and were later permitted to stay without establishing a general precedent. Their experience helps explain the stakes of family migration restrictions. A biography and a minute book answer different questions: compare the dates and evidence in each before connecting a meeting decision to a particular person or family.[3]
Look for gaps as well as names
Minutes normally privilege what the secretary chose or was authorised to record. People absent from the text may nevertheless have contributed labour, money or care. A gurdwara’s own institutional history can offer a different perspective on organisation and migration: Sri Guru Singh Sabha Southall describes groups that merged in 1964, including people who had emigrated from Malaysia and Singapore. That is a separate institution and period, not evidence for Vancouver. Comparing records across places helps frame questions while keeping their provenance distinct.[4]
