Identify the kind of record

A school register answers a question shaped by its administrative purpose. Manchester’s archive guide offers a useful comparison: admission registers record entry to a school and can include birth dates, admission and leaving dates, a parent’s name and the standard reached. Attendance summaries instead record weekly numbers and an annual overview without naming individual pupils. These are different measures of educational participation. A girl’s admission is evidence of entry, while a summary total cannot by itself reconstruct her individual progress.[1]

Read dates and absences carefully

The same guide cautions that dates assigned to its M66 admission registers refer to admission, rather than birth. It describes school log books as accounts shaped by the headteacher, with individual children only occasionally named. Read the catalogue, document headings and entries together before combining them into a chronology. These are examples from a Manchester collection, not proof that every Punjabi register used identical columns, preserved every attendance mark or survived intact.[1]

The register as a sampling frame

A Punjab study shows another use. Fariha Tajammal, Shoba Arun and Mansour Pourmehdi collected data in Kasur, Okara and Rahim Yar Khan during 2013–2015. Their survey involved 120 parents of Grade 8 girls, selected using attendance registers as the sampling frame, with access facilitated by school staff. The registers helped researchers identify families; they were not a census of every girl in those districts.[2]

The researchers then interviewed parents about their daughters’ progress beyond Grade 8, including dropout, educational expectations and school quality. That second stage matters: a register entry does not explain a family’s reasons or a pupil’s later experience. The selection began with girls attending school, so its findings cannot automatically describe those never enrolled. Here the inspected evidence is the authors’ published methods, rather than the original pupil registers or confidential interview files.[2]
