Examination and recommendation

School certificates can preserve more than an examination result, but the functions of the papers need separating. The South Asian Canadian Digital Archive describes a two-page item in the Piara Singh Bains fonds, identifier 2022_04_01_007, with a creation date of 21 April 1947. Its description distinguishes a Punjab University matriculation passing certificate from a Khalsa High School character certificate. The latter records the headmaster’s recommendation and the student’s participation in the first hockey team. Academic qualification and a school’s assessment of a pupil are related forms of evidence, not interchangeable statements. The catalogue gives a specific starting point for research; it does not establish which later employer or institution accepted either paper. Preserve that limit when connecting educational records with a life history.[1]

A route back into study

Sunder Lal’s written recollections for Panjab University describe a less direct route through education. After middle school at Tohana, he went to Rohtak because further study was unavailable in his town. He left the hostel, worked in bookkeeping and later prepared privately for matriculation, sitting the university examination from Kaithal in 1952. This is his retrospective account of interrupted study and return. A final certificate alone would conceal those changes of place, work and preparation. The account is not a survey of opportunity.[2]

Institutional place and personal movement

The same university page captions his 1954 intermediate certificate from Vaish College, Rohtak, as issued through Panjab University at Solan. Its caption for an April 1957 detailed-marks certificate notes Solan crossed out and Chandigarh inserted by hand. These described changes prompt a different question from the student’s travel: where was the issuing institution operating? Record the student’s college, examination, issuer and documentary alteration separately. An institutional address on a certificate is not proof that its holder lived or attended classes there. The captions locate evidence; they do not authenticate the originals.[2]
