Family relationships across distance
Connections between California farms and Punjabi villages were made through people: workers who migrated, relatives who stayed in Punjab, and family members who later joined them. The UC Davis archive’s account of Tuly Singh Johl identifies his origin in Jandiala, Jalandhar district, and describes his work on a California farm. It records that he gradually sponsored relatives to join him, including his son in 1948 and wife in 1958. The timing matters: the family lived apart for years. This account is one documented family history, not proof that all migrations followed the same sequence.[1]
Building a farm business
The archive’s biography of Mohinderjit Kaur Thiara records her move in 1954 to join her husband and his relatives on a peach farm near Yuba City. It describes how an earlier migrant in the family had saved earnings, invested in farming and helped relatives come to the United States. The biography draws on interviews and newspaper accounts, so readers can follow the sources behind the narrative. Family labour and relationships supported the business, while legal restrictions and migration rules shaped what was possible. The experience of a successful farming family should not be assumed to represent every agricultural worker.[2]
Work often left out of records
The UC Davis archive’s pioneer women project emphasises women’s work in family farm businesses and their contributions to religious and community gatherings. Such labour is easy to miss if research relies only on a land deed or the name of a farm owner. An interview may reveal household work, childcare, farm tasks and connections to relatives that an official record does not describe. Interviews are also retrospective accounts and can be compared with dated documents. Asking whose work appears in each source gives a fuller picture of the relationships between farms, families and Punjabi places of origin.[3]
