Read the qualifier
An approximate museum date communicates a limit in what is known. Getty’s Categories for the Description of Works of Art distinguishes an uncertain year, an approximate date and a date before or after a known point. It also distinguishes a range within which a work was made from a building’s documented construction over several years. Removing those qualifications changes the claim. A reader should keep the wording and ask what evidence supports the date, rather than turning every range into a precise year.[1]
Compare a Punjab textile record
The Museum of Art & Photography’s record TXT.00210, Vari Da Bagh and Ghunghat Phulkari, gives a date around 1900 and a period field of 1851–1900. It identifies the maker as unknown and records an unsigned textile without an inscription. These are the museum’s published fields, not an exact production certificate. The two date labels should travel together when citing the record. Neither supplies a day, month or named embroiderer. The absence of a signature does not identify who made the work.[2]
Separate making from acquisition
Powerhouse’s phulkari wall hanging H6145 offers a different case. Its object statement leaves the maker and production date unknown, while its source section records a purchase in 1959 and an acquisition date of 1 September 1959. The precise acquisition date concerns the collection history. It does not resolve the unknown making date. A family-history researcher should therefore avoid describing this textile as made in 1959 simply because that is the most precise date on the page.[3]
For a research note, give the object number, retain the production-date qualification and label the acquisition date separately. This is our practical reading of the record’s different fields. Further dating would need additional evidence about this particular textile; a nearby catalogue entry or an attractive historical narrative cannot supply its missing production date.[3]
