Follow the object through time

Provenance concerns an object’s history after its creation, including owners, locations and transfers. The Getty Museum explains that researchers combine sale catalogues, inventories and personal papers with evidence on the object itself, such as marks and labels. A museum’s name is therefore the end of a research trail, not a complete explanation of how the object arrived there. The institution also distinguishes a known owner from the date of ownership and the means of transfer. One may be documented while another remains uncertain.[1]

The National Museum of Asian Art’s phulkari bagh S1991.37 has a useful qualified history. Its record suggests that Edward and Bilha Levy Bryant may have acquired it while living in Delhi between 1977 and 1981, but leaves the method unknown. It cites a June 1990 custody receipt and describes the textile as a gift in 1991. The museum also records a 2023 internal collection transfer. These are distinct stages: possible earlier acquisition, temporary custody, gift and later institutional administration. They do not identify its original embroiderer or document every previous owner.[2]

Preserve the gap and the evidence

Brooklyn Museum’s provenance guidance explains that an undocumented interval means research has not established the ownership history between particular dates or events. It distinguishes a recorded purchase, loan or gift from a transfer whose method is not known. It also asks researchers to examine the reliability and biases of the documents they use. A confident family account and a receipt are different kinds of evidence; a surviving receipt may still leave earlier history unresolved.[3]

For a Punjab object, build a chain only as far as the evidence allows. Keep each recorded custodian, transfer and source together, then mark the remaining interval as unresolved. This is our application of the museum’s transparent-documentation method. Inventing a continuous chain would hide the very question that further research needs to investigate.[3]
