A name in family stories
An older place name can keep particular relationships within reach. In her 2018 Museum of Material Memory essay, Samiya Chopra remembers her grandfather Dharam Vir Seth repeatedly connecting stories to Lyallpur. The city’s later name, Faisalabad, did not replace the name around which he narrated childhood and family life. His granddaughter’s account locates its persistence in ordinary conversation: the remembered place remained connected with people, habits and relationships after the family had moved.[1]
Correspondence across generations
After his death, Chopra found letters dating from 1952 to 1962. Her account includes correspondence from his brother remembering their Lyallpur childhood alongside later work and family matters. Reading these documents gave the granddaughter another route into his life. The place name travelled through narration and correspondence together. Her essay credits Ram Nath Chopra with translating Urdu letters; the published account and its translations mediate what another generation can recover.[1]
Names travel with institutions
Institutions could carry an older name into a different city too. Lyallpur Khalsa College’s 2010–11 quality-assurance report traces its origin to a school established in Lyallpur in 1908 and its re-establishment at Jalandhar in 1948. The report presents the college through that earlier place while discussing its work in the later location. Its title makes the connection part of routine institutional documentation, beyond an individual recollection.[2]
The college’s Overview also names its managing body as the Governing Council of Khalsa College Lyallpur. Both the institution and its governing organisation thus retain the earlier place name. Their published histories connect an educational organisation with its former setting. The Overview identifies that setting with present-day Faisalabad in Pakistan while keeping Lyallpur in the college’s name. Historical naming and current geography coexist in the institutional account, sustaining the old name’s practical use within the organisation.[3]
