A city in an irrigation landscape
Faisalabad’s district history places the area in the Rachna Doab, between the Ravi and Chenab rivers. It describes an agricultural market town developing in the setting of late nineteenth-century canal irrigation. This is the essential historical connection: the settlement was part of a reorganised agricultural landscape. Reading it only as a modern industrial centre misses the relationship between water, cultivation and the market that the official account puts at the beginning of the town’s development.[1]
Why the founding date needs care
The district portal dates the preparation of the town design to 1896 and lists 1897 as its founding year. Another official account, published by the city traffic police, instead gives 1880. The sources agree that Lyallpur district was formed in 1904. These are distinct claims, and the two founding dates cannot simply be combined. This entry retains the disagreement rather than turning an uncertain chronology into a falsely precise anniversary.[1][2]
The clock tower and the town plan
A historical feature from Associated Press of Pakistan describes eight roads radiating from a central clock tower into separate bazaars, with the plan associated with Captain Poham Young. It interprets the arrangement as resembling the Union Jack. That is an attributed description of the colonial centre; it does not mean that the whole present-day city follows that pattern. The distinction between an original planned centre and later urban growth makes the historical plan easier to understand.[4]
An old name remains a research key
The same account records the city’s renaming from Lyallpur to Faisalabad in 1977, in honour of King Faisal of Saudi Arabia. Lyallpur is therefore a useful historical search term for records created before the change. This site treats it as an alias of the same city, rather than a separate settlement or an additional article. A catalogue result under the old name should still be checked for its date and geographical scope.[2]
Agricultural education supplies another thread through the city’s changing names. The University of Agriculture’s own historical statement dates the foundation stone of the Punjab Agricultural College and Research Institute, Lyallpur, to 1906, its upgrade to a university to 1961, and the Faisalabad form of its university name to 1973. That institutional sequence predates the city’s 1977 renaming. It shows why a college, a city and a district need their own chronologies even when their histories are closely connected.[3]
