Two forms of a regional name
Punjab and Panjab are alternative Roman-letter forms of the same regional name, not evidence of two different ancient homelands. The University of California, Davis archive explicitly records both spellings and explains the components panj, five, and ab, water. Writing Panjab makes that panj component visually apparent; the spelling alone does not establish a different geographical boundary.[1]
The related language name provides another example. Collins records Punjabi and Panjabi as alternatives within its British English entry, with a single pronunciation. An English spelling and a systematic rendering of a word from another language need not use identical letter conventions. The existence of the a/u variation does not, by itself, imply two different languages or rival meanings.[2]
Proper names preserve particular choices
Panjab University in Chandigarh uses the a spelling in its institutional name. Its profile traces its origins to Lahore in 1882 and describes its later move to Chandigarh. In this case, Panjab is part of the name under which a specific institution identifies itself. Replacing it automatically with Punjab would make a quotation or bibliographic reference less faithful to that source.[3]
The University of the Punjab in Lahore uses the u spelling. Its own history likewise begins with the university’s establishment in 1882 and describes the consequences of Partition for its staff and jurisdiction. The two present institutions’ names demonstrate that spelling must be checked in context. A writer cannot safely decide which institution a reference means from the regional word alone.[4]
How to use the distinction when reading
For a reference to the Chandigarh institution, preserve Panjab University and record the campus or city. The profile’s account of relocation shows why institutional continuity and geographical location require their own explanation. A spelling is a clue to a source’s naming practice; it cannot carry the entire history of the organisation.[3]
For the Lahore university, retain its stated name and identify the particular record being cited. Comparing these official histories supports a practical answer: both forms have established uses, while accurate reference depends on a name’s language, institutional convention and context. The sources here do not establish a single moment when one spelling replaced the other everywhere.[4]
