From a relative expression to its counterpart

The Lodiana grammar places Relative Pronouns and Correlative Pronouns in consecutive sections. Its relative ਜੋ has person and thing readings in the accompanying English explanations; the following section supplies ਸੋ among the corresponding forms. Each also has a case table. This organisation invites a reader to follow a reference through its grammatical form rather than translating every occurrence as an independent question. The relative expression introduces the person or thing under discussion, while a corresponding expression can pick up that connection. The case rows also show why a connected expression need not repeat the same visible form at every point.[1][2]

Connections of quantity, size and kind

Wilson’s comparative pronominal table makes several dimensions visible at once. Its columns concern quantity, size, likeness and share, with rows for demonstratives, interrogatives and relatives. The relative row can thus concern how much or what sort, as well as a person. The Lodiana lists likewise include quantity, kind and size among their relative and corresponding expressions. Following such a connection requires noticing which dimension the construction has introduced. A quantity expression and a person expression do not ask a reader to supply the same kind of information, even when an English paraphrase might begin with a similar linking word.[1][2]

A written jo–so connection

One line in Wilson’s Thal-labelled selection supplies a concrete written instance. In a statement about desired jewels, jo koi introduces whoever desires them, and so resumes that person in the statement that follows. Wilson’s adjacent English rendering makes the connection between whoever and he explicit. The line illustrates a grammatical relationship within an attributed printed selection; it is not evidence that every conversation uses that wording or that its claim about obtaining jewels is factual. Read it alongside the pronoun table, keeping the connected parts together. No complete poem, new verse translation, pronunciation model or performance is supplied here.[2]
