A name across Punjab

Bajwa is a surname used in Punjabi communities. The Dictionary of American Family Names, reproduced by Ancestry, describes an Indian and Pakistani Punjabi Sikh usage associated with a Jat clan, while stating that the etymology is unexplained. That is a reference entry about a name rather than an individual family history. It should not be used to infer that every bearer has the same faith, language, caste or ancestry. Romanized names can be recorded in different ways, and a shared surname cannot by itself prove that two people are close relatives.[1]

A Punjabi short-story writer

The Anand Awards profile of Ali Usman Bajwa identifies him as a playwright, director and short-story writer from Sialkot district. It says he first wrote in Urdu and later turned to Punjabi, and notes that some stories were transcribed into Gurmukhi. This profile was prepared for his 2022 award and is a dated portrait of one writer’s work. Its account of his language choices belongs to him; it does not describe the choices or cultural affiliations of all Bajwa families. The profile is a starting point for locating his stories in literary journals.[2]

A book launch in Lahore

In October 2026 Dawn reported the Lahore launch of Ali Usman Bajwa’s Punjabi short-story collection Pehli Roti, published by Sanjh Publications. The report says the book contains thirteen stories and describes an event involving the University of the Punjab’s Institute of Punjabi and Cultural Studies. This source records a particular publication and event, while the award profile provides earlier biographical context. Neither supplies a genealogy for the surname. People researching their own families can compare names, local records and oral accounts, keeping family traditions distinct from documentary proof of a specific connection. The author also read at the event.[3]
