Evidence record · given name

Meaning and use are separate questions.

Lexical evidence: A dictionary-based meaning for the complete personal name has not been established here.

Documented use: Baldev Singh appears in parliamentary records; Baldev Raj in IGCAR’s former-directors record.

Baldev Singh in a contemporary directory

The 1950 Who’s Who for India’s Provisional Parliament includes Baldev Singh under Punjab. Its entry identifies earlier service as Punjab’s development minister and records responsibility for defence in the interim and independent Indian governments. This contemporary directory supplies a dated, regional occurrence of the complete name, rather than a retrospective list of attractive name meanings.[1]

The entry’s formal heading places The Honourable Sardar after the name. Its front matter presents the title before Baldev Singh. The surrounding order changes with the directory’s purpose, while the personal form remains recognisable. Neither arrangement explains how Baldev was formed as a name.[1]

The name attached to a recorded speaker

The parliamentary proceedings of 9 May 1951 provide a different document type. During oral questions about martial songs, the minister is identified as The Minister of Defence, with Sardar Baldev Singh in parentheses. Subsequent replies use the shorter speaker label Sardar Baldev Singh. The transition links office, title and personal name within a single debate.[2]

The subject was the selection of songs for military-band performance. Naming that exchange makes the evidence locatable without turning this entry into a general biography of the minister. The proceedings record public speech under the full name, not a statement about its etymology or the circumstances in which it was chosen.[2]

A separate scientific bearer

IGCAR’s record of former directors identifies Dr. Baldev Raj as director from May 2004 to April 2011. It describes work in materials examination and the development of non-destructive evaluation capabilities. Baldev is thus also documented within a different full name and professional record, several decades after the parliamentary sources.[3]

Keeping Raj and Singh with their respective records prevents two distinct people from being combined because they share Baldev. The scientific institution supplies a role and term of service; it does not connect its director to the minister’s family or explain a compound-name meaning.[3]
