A name in two Punjabs

The surname Cheema appears in Punjabi communities on both sides of the border. The Dictionary of American Family Names, reproduced by Ancestry, describes Muslim and Sikh uses in Pakistani and Indian Punjab and connects the name with a Jat clan; it leaves the etymology unexplained. This entry identifies documented associations, not a complete family tree. It cannot determine an individual’s faith, caste, language or ancestry. Families may record and pronounce names differently, and a shared Roman spelling is not proof that two individuals are close relatives. Ask how a person identifies themselves and compare records before drawing conclusions.[1]

Stories and language

In 2010 Dawn reviewed So’Ambar, a collection of Punjabi stories by Naseer Ahmad Cheema. The review describes Cheema as an educationist who first wrote Urdu short stories before producing this Punjabi collection, published by the Pakistan Punjabi Adabi Board. It discusses the rural setting and the relationship between older and newer settlers in the Faisalabad area as themes in his work. This is a reviewer’s interpretation of a particular collection, not a history of every family called Cheema. The book itself offers readers a way to examine the stories and their language beyond the review.[2]

A bilingual poetry collection

A separate 2023 Dawn report records the Lahore launch of Soz-i-Daroon by Kausar Jamal Cheema. Speakers at the event described a collection divided into Urdu and Punjabi sections; the report also says that the poet read from her work. Naseer Ahmad Cheema and Kausar Jamal Cheema are distinct people. Their public literary records show the surname in two writing contexts, without establishing a relationship between them. An event report captures a particular day and its speakers’ views rather than a complete bibliography. Readers can seek the books and compare names, publication details and original records when researching a family.[3]
