More than one origin

Gill occurs as a Punjabi surname, but the same Roman spelling also has histories in several European languages. The Dictionary of American Family Names, reproduced by Ancestry, proposes a Punjabi interpretation and records the name among more than one Punjabi Sikh group. It also lists English, Scottish, Irish and other possible origins. These are dictionary explanations, some explicitly tentative, rather than evidence about a particular person’s ancestors. The spelling Gill alone cannot reliably establish ethnicity, religion, language, caste or family relationship; a researcher must look at the individual records and how a family identifies itself.[1]

Writing across languages

The writer Ravinder Ravi identifies himself on his website as Ravinder Singh Gill and describes writing in Punjabi, English and Hindi. His biography records publications in Shahmukhi in Pakistan and a first poetry collection in 1961. This is a self-presented literary biography, useful for tracing the names under which his work appears. A catalogue search for his surname alone might miss books listed under Ravinder Ravi. The information illustrates one writer’s path through names, scripts and publication, rather than a shared history of everyone who uses Gill.[2]

Literary work in Punjab

Publisher Singh Brothers profiles poet and editor Gurbhajan Singh Gill and lists his books, including Agan Katha and Surkh Samunder. It records his work as a Punjabi editor at Punjab Agricultural University and gives a retirement year of 2013. This publisher’s biography and Ravinder Ravi’s website concern different people; their shared surname does not demonstrate a family connection. For family research, a person’s own account can be compared with dated documents and local or migration records. The range of possible origins for the spelling makes that individual context especially important. The publisher also lists his book Man Pardesi among his literary works.[3]
