A surname reference

Deol is a surname used in Punjabi communities. The Dictionary of American Family Names, reproduced by Ancestry, connects one Punjabi Sikh use with a Jat clan but describes its etymology as unexplained. That classification is a reference point rather than proof of any particular person’s family history. A surname does not by itself determine someone’s faith, caste, language or identity, and people who share it need not be close relatives. The report documents a particular commemoration and the views voiced there; it is not a complete bibliography or a family history for other people named Deol. Its record gives the title, publisher, language and ISBN, helping readers find the edition. The book concerns Sahir Ludhianvi, a poet and film lyricist associated with Urdu writing. Surinder Deol and Bakhtawar Singh Deol are distinct people; their shared surname does not establish a family relationship. A dictionary, a commemorative report and a book catalogue offer different kinds of evidence. None alone establishes the ancestry or personal identity of another individual bearing Deol.[3]
