A proposed origin

Dhaliwal is a surname used in Punjabi communities. The Dictionary of American Family Names, reproduced by Ancestry, offers a place-based explanation involving an ancestral place-name and a suffix denoting a person from a place. It presents this as an account of the name, not a proven origin for each individual family. Its classification should not be used to infer someone’s faith, caste, language or identity. A shared Roman spelling does not demonstrate a close relationship. Tracing a particular family requires checking names, localities and dates against records and the accounts of the people concerned.[1]

A Punjabi fiction writer

The Dhahan Prize profile describes Simran Dhaliwal as a Punjabi fiction writer raised near Patti in Tarn Taran district. It lists the short-story collections Aas Aje Baaqi Hai and Us Pal as well as books for children. A British Columbia government announcement records Us Pal among the runners-up for the 2016 Dhahan Prize. The profile reflects the prize’s account of an author and its interpretation of his writing; the government notice records a particular award year. Neither source supplies a family genealogy for other people who use Dhaliwal.[2][3]

The Dhahan Prize’s page for Us Pal identifies nine stories and discusses themes including economic inequality, caste and social change. This is the prize organisation’s reading of a collection, and readers may draw other conclusions from the stories themselves. A catalogue entry, review and interview each answer different questions about a writer’s work. The award example establishes a named person’s use of Dhaliwal in Punjabi literary records, not a common origin for everyone with that surname.
