Evidence record · given name

Meaning and use are separate questions.

Lexical evidence: A dictionary-based meaning for the complete personal name has not been established here.

Documented use: Fatima appears in Fatima Jinnah’s recorded name and in the name of the Lahore medical institution commemorating her.

An institution named for Fatima Jinnah

The University of Health Sciences’ 2023–2024 prospectus explains why Lahore’s Fatima Jinnah Medical College received its name. It reports that Muhammad Ali Jinnah approved associating the institution with his sister Fatima Jinnah. This is evidence for a particular commemorative decision: the college’s name refers to a named historical person. It does not offer a lexical derivation of her given name.[1]

The same prospectus distinguishes establishment in 1948 from formal inauguration on 31 March 1949. It identifies Shujaat Ali as the first principal and records an initial cohort of thirty-nine students who graduated in 1953. These details locate the name in the early institutional history of women’s medical education in Pakistan, rather than treating it as a decorative label detached from its setting.[1]

The site’s history began before that name

The university’s own history page traces an earlier institutional sequence. It describes the Punjab Medical Education Relief Society in 1941 and Balak Ram Medical College in 1942, whose first fifty students included forty-four men and six women. It records affiliation with the University of the Punjab and the opening of college blocks by Sarojini Naidu in January 1946. The Fatima Jinnah name therefore sits within a history of institutional change.[2]

The history page also records closure around Partition and the later award of university status on 1 July 2015. Its retrospective account and the admissions prospectus answer different questions: one follows the institution through several stages, while the other explicitly explains the commemorative association. Neither should be mistaken for the source of the personal name Fatima itself.[2]

What this example establishes

In this case, Fatima is securely documented as an element of Fatima Jinnah’s recorded name and of a Lahore institution named in her honour. The inspected sources do not establish its full etymology or her family’s original naming intention. Those fields remain open rather than being filled with an uncited baby-name translation.[1]
