A name and a proposed origin
Kamboj is used as a surname in Punjabi communities. The Dictionary of American Family Names, reproduced by Ancestry, presents a geographical explanation and describes Punjabi uses using both a caste category and a religious category. That interpretation is a published account of a name, not proof of a particular family’s ancient migration or descent. A surname alone cannot determine someone’s religion, caste, language or close relationship to another bearer. Spellings and the ways people use names can change between records and generations. Family-specific evidence and personal accounts are needed to investigate a particular history.[1]
Poetry in a diaspora
In 2019 The Tribune reported that Punjabi University honoured California-based poet Sukhwinder Kamboj for promoting Punjabi language and culture abroad. The report lists collections including Jang Jashan ate Jugnu and quotes a university historian’s assessment of his writing about changes in Punjabi society. This is an account of one writer and one event, not an account of all families named Kamboj. A University of Delhi Punjabi syllabus also lists Jang Jashan ate Jugnu in a section on diaspora literature. These records provide places to begin reading and studying the author’s work.[2][3]
Language and digital publishing
A Punjabi University faculty profile lists work by C. P. Kamboj on Punjabi language and computers. A Punjabi Bhawan Toronto catalogue separately records a book by C. P. Kamboj. These are examples of the name appearing in language and publishing records, distinct from the poetry of Sukhwinder Kamboj. A shared surname does not establish a family relationship between authors. University profiles and catalogues can help distinguish titles, subjects and editions, but they do not establish anyone else’s ancestry. Researchers should check full names and the source context when locating a person or tracing a family. The catalogue identifies the author by initials.[4][5]
