Different origins, similar spelling
Kohli appears in Punjabi naming records, but the same spelling can have different histories elsewhere. The Dictionary of American Family Names records a Punjabi Khatri clan name whose etymology it describes as unexplained, and separately gives a Swiss German explanation for Kohli or Köhli. Similar-looking names do not necessarily share an origin. Even within a single region, the surname cannot establish a person’s religion, caste or connection to another family. Research into an individual history should compare names, dates, places and relationships across evidence rather than treat a dictionary entry as a completed family tree.[1]
A scholar of Punjabi literature
A government library catalogue lists Punjabi Sahit da Itihas, edited by Surinder Singh Kohli, as a 1973 Panjab University publication on the history and criticism of Punjabi literature. WorldCat separately records an English-language History of Punjabi Literature by Surindar Singh Kohli, published in Delhi in 1993. Catalogue records are useful for locating editions, identifying a work’s language and checking publication details, but they do not by themselves summarise a book’s argument. Different spellings of an author’s given name can appear in catalogue records, so readers should also compare titles, dates and publishers.[2][3]
A historian with the same surname
The Encyclopedia of Sikhism describes historian Sita Ram Kohli’s work on Punjab and records his preparation of a volume on the years 1839–1849 that appeared after his death as Sunset of the Sikh Empire. It also notes his work with historical documents and students. This is a separate historical record from the literary catalogue entries for Surinder Singh Kohli. Their shared surname is not evidence of a family relationship. Checking an author’s full name and field, rather than searching on surname alone, helps avoid attributing a literary study to the wrong scholar or merging their careers.[4]
