A name and its elements

A name reference gives ਰਾਜਵੀਰ as a Gurmukhi form of Rajveer and describes the name in terms of the elements raj and vir. Such a breakdown is a published interpretation, not evidence of the reason an individual family chose the name. The spelling Rajvir also appears in public records. Roman spellings can vary, and similar sounds do not guarantee that two names or two people are identical. Preserve the form used by the person or document being described.[1]

A singer named Rajvir

A profile for the Purab Mubarak music project identifies Rajvir Jawanda as a Punjabi singer and credits him as a performer on the project’s title track. This record is useful evidence of one public spelling and one musical career. A project biography promotes the work as well as describing it, so its evaluative language should be read with that purpose in mind. It does not reveal what Jawanda’s family intended the name to mean, or make his career representative of everyone called Rajveer.[2]

Tracing an individual

The Tribune describes Jawanda as a Punjabi singer and actor who had served in the Punjab Police before pursuing music. It discusses his early career and identifies an album called Munda Like Me. The report concerns a specific individual; a researcher should compare a full name, occupation and date before combining it with another record. A shared first name is not proof of a family relationship, a common birthplace or a shared religious identity.[3]

Reading spellings with care

The name reference’s Punjabi spelling and the artist’s Roman spelling illustrate why a search may require more than one form. Rajveer and Rajvir may represent the same pronunciation in some contexts, but a transcription is a research lead rather than a substitute for a person’s own preferred spelling. Check the original script when available and record any uncertainty. Naming practices change across families and generations, so examples from music should not be treated as a survey of Punjabi usage.[1]
