A published interpretation

Behind the Name traces Ranjit to a Sanskrit form associated with being coloured, pleased or delighted, and lists Ranjeet as a Roman spelling variant. Its entry covers several South Asian language traditions; a name shared across languages does not belong exclusively to one region. The interpretation is a reference work’s account of a possible linguistic origin, not evidence of why every family chose the name. People may use different written forms and pronunciations, so an individual’s own preference is the best guide when addressing them.[1][2]

The Lahore court

Lahore Museum associates much of its Sikh gallery with Maharaja Ranjit Singh and records his capture of Lahore in 1799. The Metropolitan Museum of Art catalogues a painting showing the maharaja travelling through Lahore on an elephant, giving his reign as 1801–1839. These museum descriptions place one bearer of the name in Punjab’s political and artistic history. The objects and their interpretations offer different kinds of evidence about the ruler and his representation. They do not establish why another family selected the same given name, which has appeared in many different times and settings. Lahore Museum describes a collection that includes coins, paintings, documents and other objects.[3][4]

A name in Punjabi recordings

Music service Qobuz lists an album credited to Ranjit Kaur and Muhammad Sadiq and gives production and composition credits for its tracks. This Ranjit Kaur is a different person from the ruler discussed above. A commercial catalogue records how a particular release credits its performers; it does not provide a complete history of Punjabi duet singing or every version of a song. The name in a recording and the name in a royal portrait appear in different contexts and centuries. They are examples of documented use, not evidence of a family relationship or a statistical measure of popularity.[5]
