Meaning and spelling
Sahni is a surname found in Punjabi communities. The Dictionary of American Family Names connects it with a Sanskrit word for a commander and points readers to the spelling Sawhney. The dictionary separately describes Sawhney as an Anglicised form. These are accounts of usage and proposed derivation, not proof that a particular ancestor was a commander or that everyone using either spelling shares a recent ancestor. Researchers should compare full names, dates, relatives and localities across records. Spellings can vary as people move between languages or as clerks record names, so a match in spelling is a starting point rather than a conclusion.[1][2]
A writer from Rawalpindi
The Library of Congress identifies Bhisham Sahni as a Hindi fiction writer born in Rawalpindi in 1915. Its profile highlights his novel Tamas, which addresses the communal violence surrounding Partition, and lists stories, plays and translations among his work. It also records his knowledge of several languages, including Punjabi and Urdu. The profile lists selected readings in the South Asian Literary Recordings Project. Fiction can illuminate the human experience of a historical event while remaining a crafted literary work rather than a direct record of every event depicted.[3]
The Library announced a new digital home for this recordings project in 2026. Its research guide links a Bhisham Sahni reading of short stories; the linked item returned an access challenge during our check, and the audio has not been independently auditioned.[6][7]
An identified family relationship
The same Library of Congress profile identifies actor and writer Balraj Sahni as Bhisham’s elder brother and records Bhisham’s English biography Balraj, My Brother. This is a documented relationship between two named people, not evidence that all Sahnís are related to them.[3]
The Films Division catalogue independently describes Balraj Sahni as an actor, writer and political activist in its entry for a biographical film. Together, the literary profile and film catalogue offer different routes into the work of the brothers. A family researcher can use similarly specific records to test a connection, rather than infer one from the surname alone.[4][5]
