More than one context
Suri is found as a surname in Punjabi records. The Dictionary of American Family Names connects a Punjabi use to a Sanskrit term with several meanings, including sage, and also records a separate Hungarian place-based name. Similar spellings can therefore have different histories. Even within one region a surname cannot establish a person’s religion, language or family relationship. The dictionary offers an interpretation to investigate, not a family tree. Anyone tracing a specific Suri family should begin with known relatives and places, check the documents behind a claim, and allow for variant spellings in records made in different languages.[1]
A nineteenth-century chronicle
Sohan Lal Suri is associated with Umdat ut-Twarikh, a Persian chronicle of Sikh history. An 1894 notice describes it as a five-volume work and situates its author at the court of Maharaja Ranjit Singh. The chronicle is associated with the period of Maharaja Ranjit Singh and his successors. A court chronicle is a source created in a particular political setting: its account can be compared with other contemporary evidence and later scholarship. The name of its author does not establish a connection with another Suri family. Readers can examine both a historian’s discussion of the work and editions of the chronicle itself.[2]
Punjabi literature in translation
Navdeep Suri translated works by his grandfather, Punjabi novelist Nanak Singh. A report reproduced by the Punjab Research Group discusses A Life Incomplete, an English translation of Adh Khidiya Phool, and places the novel in relation to the author’s imprisonment in Lahore. Translation can bring a work to readers who do not read its original language, while particular choices of words and titles are worth comparing with the source text. The documented relationship here is between this translator and his grandfather; it should not be assumed to extend to the earlier chronicler or to other people named Suri.[3]
