Evidence record · given name

Meaning and use are separate questions.

Lexical evidence: A dictionary-based meaning for the complete personal name has not been established here.

Documented use: Umar Akmal and Umar Amin are distinct full names in dated ICC notices.

Two entries should not be collapsed

Under the same unvocalised spelling, Platts’s dictionary separates ʻumr, associated with life, lifetime and age, from a proper-name entry transcribed ʻǒmar. The latter identifies the second caliph, a successor to the Prophet Muhammad. The distinction shows why a dictionary page must be read as individual entries rather than as a single collection of interchangeable meanings.[1]

In particular, the life or age gloss is attached to ʻumr. Automatically transferring it to every modern personal name Umar would bypass the dictionary’s distinction. The historical name association is documented; a bearer’s intention, preferred pronunciation and English spelling require evidence from that person’s own setting.[1]

Umar inside an identifiable full name

An ICC announcement dated 25 April 2017 includes Umar Akmal in Pakistan’s announced Champions Trophy squad. Its narrative explicitly distinguishes him from his brother Kamran Akmal. That relationship is stated by the source; it does not have to be guessed from the shared final element. The complete names identify the people more precisely than Umar or Akmal alone.[2]

The announcement supplies a date and a particular selection context, making it useful evidence of public written usage. It should not be treated as proof of final tournament participation: a squad notice records a decision at one stage, and subsequent notices may change it.[2]

The same element in a different name

The ICC’s update of 23 May 2017 states that Haris Sohail would replace Umar Akmal. The same notice separately names Umar Amin among the players considered in the selection process. Thus Umar occurs in two distinct full names within one short institutional account, and the surrounding name elements are necessary to keep their roles clear.[3]

The later notice also changes how the earlier squad announcement should be read, while preserving the spelling Umar Akmal. These records establish actual names and documentary sequence, not a dictionary meaning, a universal spelling rule or a family relationship between the two Umars.[3]
