Editing in Lahore
Ahmed Nadeem Qasmi’s professional record crosses poetry, short fiction, criticism and editorial work. Rekhta identifies his editing of Phool and Taleem-e-Niswaan in Lahore and his association with Savera. Funoon became another sustained part of his literary work, alongside the direction of Majlis-e-Tarraqi Adab in Lahore. The profile’s bibliography gives that range concrete forms: Chaupal and Aanchal appear among the story collections, Rim Jhim among the poetry, and Maani ki Talaash among the critical books. It records a writer working through publications and institutions as well as individual creative texts.[1]
A journal’s research work
Abrar Aabee’s 2013 study examines Funoon’s contribution to Urdu research. He compares specialist research venues, including Oriental College Magazine and Saheefa, with Lahore’s wider range of literary periodicals. The discussion places research within a world that also supported creative and critical writing. Funoon’s publication of documentary studies gives a specific example of that relationship, allowing questions about earlier writers and their papers to enter a general literary magazine.[2]
Ibadat Barelvi’s study of four unpublished Ghalib letters appeared in Funoon’s April 1963 issue, according to Aabee, who also gives a manuscript reference, OR12035.[2]
Class and gender in fiction
Shazia Razzaq and Jaweria Abdul Wahid’s 2024 article examines gender conflict in Qasmi’s fiction. In their reading of Be-gunah, from Chaupal, Rahman is a farmer caught in conflict with a powerful landlord. The landlord’s daughter gives evidence in Rahman’s favour against her father. The authors read that decision as courage and agency directed against the prevailing social order. Their fictional case brings gender and class into the same conflict: power works through landholding, but a woman’s action disrupts the authority of her own household. These are the critics’ interpretations of characters and actions in a short story, not allegations about a historical family.[3]
