Life and connection to Punjab

Fahmida Riaz was an Urdu poet, writer and activist. The Association for Women’s Rights in Development records her birth in Meerut and death in Lahore in 2018. Her publishing connections included Lahore as well as other cities.[4]

Funoon and broadcast work

Fahmida Riaz's publishing history included an early connection with Lahore. Zeenat Hisam's study, originally published in 1995 and later reprinted by its author, records her submission of a poem to Funoon in 1963 while studying in Hyderabad. Editor Ahmed Nadeem Qasmi responded with encouragement, and her poems began appearing regularly in the journal. The account also identifies broadcasting as professional work. Riaz joined BBC Urdu in 1968 and, until 1973, contributed Urdu news commentary and wrote and presented a weekly women's programme. That record places literary publication beside the continuing practical demands of writing for a listening audience, with Lahore's journal providing a route into print.[1]

Purpose and poetic language

In an interview with Rakhshanda Jalil, originally published in The Hindu on 6 November 2005, Riaz connected writing with a commitment to justice. She resisted the suggestion that she had simply decided to produce a prescribed kind of political poetry. Individuality, she explained, lay in diction and the manner of expression. Extensive reading mattered to that work. She also described wanting to bring Urdu closer to Sindhi and finding words in earlier Urdu poetry. Hindi, Persian and Arabic were available resources rather than mutually exclusive choices. Her account presents literary language as something a writer actively shapes through reading and selection. Jalil's 2011 repost preserves that earlier conversation; it is not a second independent interview.[2]

Remembered at a Lahore panel

A 2026 report by Naya Daur records a Lahore discussion of her literary and public work at SAFMA. Fikr o Amal and Naya Daur organised the panel, moderated by Huma Ejaz Zaman, with Raza Rumi, Tanveer Jehan and Rashid Rehman speaking. Posted on 10 August 2026, the account is a co-organiser's record of remembrance, rather than independently observed proceedings.[3]
