A singer before the partnership

Amarjot Kaur was a Punjabi singer whose work included performances and recordings before she joined Amar Singh Chamkila. In a report of a 2024 BBC Punjabi interview, her sister Jaswant Kaur recalled Amarjot’s interest in singing from childhood and named earlier collaborators, including Pyaara Singh Panchi, Dhana Singh Rangeela and Karnail Gill. She also recalled work with Manak before Amarjot began singing with Chamkila. This is a family member’s retrospective account, reported in English by Moneycontrol; the original Punjabi interview was not reviewed for this entry. It helps place Amarjot’s own musical career before the partnership for which she became widely known.[1]

Performing at akharas

Writing in The Wire, Navprit Kaur discusses Amarjot and Chamkila as performers at akharas, open-air events that could take place at village gatherings or fairs. She argues that accounts of the couple have often paid less attention to Amarjot’s role than to Chamkila’s. Her essay reads their music in the context of caste, gender and the social conventions surrounding public performance in Punjab. That argument is an interpretation, not a definitive explanation of how every listener understood their songs. It invites readers to consider Amarjot as a performer in her own right, as well as part of a duet.[2]

Their deaths and remembrance

Amarjot and Chamkila were killed with two members of their troupe near Mehsampur on 8 March 1988, while on their way to a performance. In a 2018 Mint feature, musician Lal Chand recalled the attack, and the report described the case as unsolved. Accounts and theories about who was responsible have circulated, but the article did not establish a perpetrator or motive. Amarjot’s contribution to Punjabi music deserves attention alongside the history of the partnership and the violence that ended it. [3]
