Training and family memories

In interviews conducted in 2000, Surinder Kaur recalled her elder sister Prakash Kaur’s wish to study music while they were growing up in Lahore. She described their mother singing at home and remembered that a brother supported Prakash’s formal training. According to Surinder’s account, Prakash studied Hindustani classical singing with Master Inayat Husain, who also became Surinder’s teacher. These are family recollections reported by interviewer Nirupama Dutt. They help place Prakash’s training in the musical life of a household, but should not be treated as a complete account of every teacher or performance in her early career.[1]

Lahore radio and duets

A Punjabi Screen history describes Parkash Kaur as an established All India Radio Lahore singer when Surinder came to the station for an audition in 1943. It reports that the sisters subsequently sang duets and names Budh Singh Taan among those who coached them in light singing. The article also discusses recordings made with music director Master Inayat Hussain. It uses Parkash as the spelling of the elder singer’s name. The account offers a retrospective of broadcasting and collaboration; it does not by itself establish that every programme survives in an archive or resolve all variations in dates found in other accounts.[2]

A discography of Punjabi records

A listing of Gramophone Company of India records includes entries for Prakash Kaur and for records credited to Prakash and Surinder Kaur together. Among them are entries numbered 7EPE 1863 and 7EPE 1865, each listed with a 1968 date and Punjabi folk-song titles. The discography provides catalogue numbers, credited performers and issue information that can help a reader identify particular releases. It does not establish when every song was first performed or recorded. The database entries were inspected for this article; the discs and their audio were not examined. The record of the sisters’ duets is distinct from a complete discography of Prakash’s individual work.[3]
