Lahore and a theatre route

Balwant Gargi’s work connected literary study with theatre practice. Panjab University’s centenary profile records education in Lahore, including master’s study at Forman Christian College, and theatre study with Norah Richards in the Kangra Valley. Its account identifies research books alongside plays, pen portraits and documentary work. The range helps explain why a career associated with Punjabi drama also involved examining performance traditions and writing about other cultural figures.[1]

A colleague remembers different forms

Writer N. S. Tasneem’s remembrance offers a particular encounter with that range. He recalls Gargi speaking at a public lecture about successive stages of life in Bathinda, Lahore, Delhi, the United States and Chandigarh. The talk became an account of developing as a writer through changing settings. Tasneem describes more than a dramatist: he identifies a storyteller, a writer of pen portraits and a critic of Indian theatre. He gives Kakka Reta a place within the fiction and also recalls teaching at the University of Washington before work in Chandigarh. His comments on autobiographical writing attend to its storytelling quality. Tasneem names The Purple Moonlight, valuing its appeal as autobiographical storytelling. These are a colleague’s recollections and readings, rather than a transcript of the lecture or a complete career record. They preserve the variety of Gargi’s public literary work alongside the theatre productions with which he was associated.[2]

A theatre institution and later memory

Panjab University identifies Gargi as the founding director of its Indian Theatre Department and names the open-air theatre associated with him. Its 2016 centenary page proposes productions, new editions and an archive. Those plans show how the institution intended to preserve and reactivate his work through teaching, performance and collections. Each proposal would need its own later record before it could be described as a completed centenary outcome.[1]
