Writing about art and Lahore

Fakir Syed Aijazuddin is an author and art historian whose work includes the visual history of Lahore and the Punjab region. His professional website describes a career in chartered accountancy alongside books on Pahari painting, maps, Lahore and diplomacy. The two fields are distinct parts of his career, even where both involve careful work with records. His website is an author’s own account of his publications and experience; library catalogues and the books themselves offer independent ways to check publication details and examine his interpretations.[1]

Paintings and Sikh portraits

In an essay on the Fakir family of Lahore, Aijazuddin identifies his books Pahari Paintings and Sikh Portraits in the Lahore Museum, published in 1977, and Sikh Portraits by European Artists, published in 1979. He describes the latter as a study of paintings in the Princess Bamba collection. These works offer routes into collections connected with Punjab’s artistic and political past. A portrait can be studied as an artwork and as a historical source, but its attribution, date, sitter and later ownership should all be checked before using it as evidence.[2]

A history of Lahore

The Tuli Research Centre’s catalogue lists Lahore: Illustrated Views of the 19th Century by F. S. Aijazuddin, published by Mapin in 2004. His own website also lists writing on the city and on regional maps. A bibliographic record can help a reader distinguish a particular edition from another work with a similar title; it does not itself establish every argument in the book. Researching the city through images, maps and written accounts raises questions about who created each source and why. Comparing his work with other histories of Lahore can broaden the perspectives available to a reader. The catalogue also identifies Ahmedabad as the location of the book’s publisher.[3]
