From Punjab to distance running
Fauja Singh was a Punjabi-born runner who became widely known for taking up marathon running late in life. The Indian Express reported that his home village was Beas in Jalandhar district and that he died in a road accident there in July 2025. He had also lived in Britain and competed internationally. His story connects family and migration with the public life of a runner, but no single biography can capture every part of it. Reports of his age and birth date require particular care, because formal verification for age-based records was disputed.[1]
A late start and international races
World Athletics describes Singh’s first London Marathon in 2000 and his later participation in international events. It also records that he carried the Olympic torch in 2012 and retired from competitive running after a 10-kilometre event associated with the Hong Kong Marathon in 2013. These reported events should be distinguished from age-group records: completing a distance is a different claim from having an officially ratified age-based record. The World Athletics account reflects information available when it was written in 2021; later reporting is needed for events after that date.[2]
Age and record claims
After Singh completed the Toronto Waterfront Marathon in 2011, Guinness World Records stated that it had not received the documentary proof needed to ratify his claimed date of birth or recognise him as the oldest person to complete a marathon. That statement did not dispute that he completed the race; it concerned verification of age for a record. Later reports often described him using his claimed age. A careful account can recognise his running and public influence while attributing that age and explaining the documentary limitation. Race results, biographies and record-body decisions answer related but different questions. The difference is important whenever a person’s age forms part of a sporting claim.[3]
