A runner shaped by Partition
Milkha Singh, widely known as the Flying Sikh, became one of India’s best-known runners. World Athletics recounts that he was born in a village in the Punjab region, lost family members amid the violence of Partition and later made his way to India. Accounts of his early life and birth date vary, so a single date should be treated with care. His personal experience of displacement belongs to the much wider history of 1947, but it cannot represent every family affected. He later joined the Indian Army, where running became a central part of his life.[1]
The 1960 Olympic final
At the 1960 Rome Olympics Singh finished fourth in the men’s 400 metres. World Athletics records his performance in Rome and describes a national mark that stood for decades. Fourth place was close to the medals but was not an Olympic medal; the distinction matters in retelling his career. A race result is a precise record of one performance, while interviews and later reflections can show how an athlete understood that moment. Timing methods and published results should be checked when comparing marks from different eras.[2]
The federation’s obituary says that he competed at three Olympic Games.[1]
A lasting sporting legacy
World Athletics reported that Singh’s Indian 400-metre record was surpassed by Paramjeet Singh in 1998, decades after Rome. Its career profile also lists his performances over 200 metres, 400 metres and the relay. His story is often told through a single Olympic race, but it spans training, national competition and international representation. Later generations have remembered him as an influential figure in Indian athletics. Sources about his achievements should be read alongside his own accounts and interviews, with distinctions made between a verified result, a personal recollection and a dramatic retelling.[2][3]
