A writer and engineer

Ilyas Ghuman is a Punjabi writer and editor whose work is discussed in accounts of Punjabi short fiction. A Daily Times review describes him as born in the Wazirabad area and trained in electrical engineering, and reports that he worked as an engineer as well as writing and editing literary magazines. The report’s account of his career is a useful starting point, although independent records would strengthen exact biographical dates. He should not be confused with another public figure of the same name: the evidence cited here concerns the Punjabi literary writer.[1]

Stories and literary records

A Punjab University Punjabi journal article on symbolism in Pakistani Punjabi short stories cites Ilyas Ghuman’s Pind di Laj, giving a Lahore publisher and a 1999 date for the cited edition. A literary bibliography provides a route to the source and shows that the work has been cited in scholarship. It is not a substitute for reading the book or establishing its complete publication history. Romanized Punjabi titles can vary, and comparing author, publisher and date helps a reader distinguish editions in library catalogues.[2]

Literary networks and criticism

A 2007 literary review in The News records a foreword by Ilyas Ghuman to Malik Mehar Ali’s Punjabi short-story collection Dhah Lagi Wasti, identifying him as a writer and critic. The reviewer describes the book as a debut collection of eleven pieces, some previously presented at literary meetings in Islamabad and Rawalpindi. This record places Ghuman within a network of writers and publishing as well as his own fiction. It is a dated snapshot rather than a complete record of his criticism. Further interviews, publication records and copies of his books would help establish a fuller bibliography. The foreword is evidence of a role beyond writing his own stories.[3]
