Writing from experience
Punjabi singer and songwriter Karan Aujla told Indulge in 2024 that his early life in Ghurala village, the loss of his parents and his move to Canada had influenced his writing. He described drawing on experiences and stories from Punjab and balancing Punjabi elements with contemporary sounds. Asked about criticism, he recalled doubts about his early writing and said he remained focused on making music. These are the artist’s own reflections on his career and creative aims. They offer context for his songwriting without assuming that each song is a literal account of his life or that every listener interprets it alike.[1]
A Canadian music award
The JUNO Awards named Aujla the winner of its 2024 fan-voted Fan Choice award. Its account says he performed Admiring You and Softly with producer Ikky at the awards and notes that he had written for artists including Jassi Gill, Deep Jandu and Elly Mangat. In accepting the award, Aujla reflected on losing his parents and moving from India to Canada. The award organisation’s report provides a specific Canadian recognition and names a musical collaborator. It does not measure every part of his audience or suggest that one award represents the whole Punjabi music scene.[2]
Writing for other performers
An Indian Express profile discussed Aujla writing G.O.A.T. for Diljit Dosanjh and described Tauba Tauba from the 2024 film Bad Newz as a song Aujla wrote, composed and sang. Speaking to the newspaper, Aujla described allowing personal experiences and his cultural background to inform his songwriting. The report also mentioned his 2023 album Making Memories and collaborations with other performers. These examples show different roles that a songwriter may take: writing for another singer, collaborating on recordings, and performing his own work. The feature combines Aujla’s account with the journalist’s interpretation of his career.[3]
