Growing up between Punjab and Canada

Singer Jaswinder Singh Bains, known as Jazzy B, recalled being born in Durgapur, Punjab, and moving with his family to Vancouver when he was five. In an interview with PollywoodBoxOffice, he described attending school in Canada and taking music seriously while still young. He said that adapting to a new country took time, though he made friends at school, and recalled his family’s initial uncertainty about a musical career. He identified Parlok Singh as a supporter of his first album. These are personal recollections of migration and early work, told retrospectively by the performer.[1]

Recording and moving to Britain

A 2004 Houston Chronicle profile reported that Bains recorded his first album in Canada in 1993 before moving to Britain. The article discussed his Punjabi-language singing and the 2003 album Tera Roop. Bains described listening to different kinds of music while growing up, including rap, while also learning Punjabi music at home. He told the newspaper he worked with songwriters and described making both traditional-style material and music with other influences. The profile presents an artist whose working life crossed several places; its discussion of his sound includes both the singer’s own perspective and the journalist’s description.[2]

Remembering a musical teacher

In a 2013 Times of India interview, Jazzy B remembered a school teacher in Canada and spoke about the advice he associated with singer Kuldeep Manak. He described Manak as his ustad, or teacher, and credited him with encouraging self-belief and sustained hard work. He said Manak encouraged him to feel proud of his work. That relationship links his Punjabi musical education with a career developed partly in the diaspora. It is presented here through Bains’s own recollections, which describe the importance of a teacher without implying that his music simply reproduced Manak’s recordings.[3]
