An educator in Lahore

Lala Hansraj, also remembered as Mahatma Hansraj, was an educationist associated with the Arya Samaj and the Dayanand Anglo-Vedic institutions of Lahore. The Indian Biographical Dictionary of 1915 records his education in Lahore, membership of the Arya Samaj and work as a teacher and principal. As a contemporary directory, it is useful for offices held during his life, but its short entry cannot give a complete view of his ideas or their reception. Names are rendered in different forms, including Hans Raj. His work belongs to a wider history of educational and religious reform in colonial Punjab. The directory also names Mission High School and Government College in Lahore, describes his work as a joint editor, and lists him as a Punjab University fellow and textbook committee member.[1]

The DAV school and college

Hansraj College, University of Delhi, describes the opening of a Dayanand Anglo-Vedic school in Lahore in 1886 and identifies Hansraj as its first headmaster. It states that he later became honorary principal when the college was founded in 1889. The college’s institutional history commemorates a figure after whom it is named and presents an appreciative view. Historians can compare such accounts with university affiliation records, budgets and the experiences of students and teachers. The institution’s curriculum and access were shaped by debate over religious education, English-language learning and the needs of a changing society.[2]

Schools, ideals and debate

Ankur Kakkar’s dissertation studies the school in colonial Lahore. His accessible abstract frames its contribution as combining traditional and modern education, and examines the founders’ aims, finances, curriculum and institutional network. The catalogue dates the dissertation to 2018 and the online edition to 2021. The full thesis was not available during this check. A school’s stated ideals do not by themselves establish equal access or agreement among all the communities of Punjab.[3][4]
