College and a first recording
Singer Malkit Singh recalled in a 2025 Songlines interview that he grew up in Hussainpur in Jalandhar district and sang at school events before entering a university youth festival while at Lyallpur Khalsa College. He connected the name Golden Star, used by his band in Britain, to a gold medal he won there. He remembered recording a demonstration tape in Birmingham with a dhol player and a harmonium player. According to Singh, Oriental Star Agencies chose material from that recording for his first album, Nach Gidhe Wich. [1]
Migration, recordings and family
Singh told Songlines that separation from his parents and siblings after moving to Britain informed songs about family. He also described recording subsequent albums in India before making Midas Touch in Britain, where he said he took responsibility for both music and lyrics and incorporated sounds associated with nightclubs. Looking back, he recalled a collaboration with Birmingham producer Bally Sagoo on remixes of his songs. He described the reception of bhangra in British clubs in a separate 2008 interview. His recollections connect migration, family and recording.[1][2]
Recognition in 2008
In May 2008 IANS reported that Singh received an MBE at Buckingham Palace. The report said he had come to Britain in 1984, and quoted him describing Britain as the place where his musical journey began, despite having won medals as a college singer in India. IANS reported that the singer had been living in Birmingham and described bhangra gaining an audience in British dance halls and nightclubs. Singh told the agency that he had worked hard on his music. The report placed the honour alongside his experience in India and Britain, while recording his own account of where his career began. The ceremony was a specific public recognition, rather than a measure of his entire audience.[3]
