From Punjab to international athletics

Kamalpreet Kaur is an Indian discus thrower associated with Kabarwala village in Punjab. A report on her Olympic final identified her as the daughter of a farming family from the village. World Athletics’ Olympic result identifies her in the women’s discus event. Names shared by several Indian athletes can make records difficult to distinguish, so the event, birth date and competition are important checks. A sporting biography connects her Punjab background to international competition without assuming that a birthplace alone explains an athlete’s development or achievements.[1][2]

The Tokyo Olympic final

At the Tokyo Olympic Games, held in 2021, Kaur placed sixth in the women’s discus final with a best throw of 63.70 metres. World Athletics’ event result records the placing and distance, while the Athletics Federation of India reported that she had qualified for the final by meeting the 64-metre qualifying standard. These are separate performances in the qualifying round and final. An event result records a particular competition on a particular day; it should not be confused with an athlete’s personal best or the final ranking in a different meeting.[2][4]

The 2022 disciplinary decision

In 2022 the Athletics Integrity Unit imposed a three-year period of ineligibility after a sample collected in March 2022 showed the prohibited substance stanozolol. Its published decision records that Kaur admitted the violation and accepted the sanction, which was reduced from four years under the applicable rules. The decision describes her explanation involving a supplement and the AIU’s investigation of it. The period ran from 29 March 2022; results from 7 March 2022 were disqualified under the decision. These dates matter: the decision does not disqualify her 2021 Olympic result. The published decision notes that she waived a hearing on the accepted consequences and records rights of appeal.[3][5]
