From Moosa to songwriting

Shubhdeep Singh Sidhu, known as Sidhu Moose Wala, came from Moosa village in Punjab’s Mansa district. He studied electrical engineering at Guru Nanak Dev Engineering College in Ludhiana, graduating in 2016. After his death, teachers and a friend told The Indian Express about his participation in college singing and writing events and his early music practice. The newspaper reported that he wrote the lyrics for License, performed by singer Ninja. A friend recalled that he moved to Canada for further study. These recollections describe his early development through people who knew him, rather than an exhaustive account of his education.[1]

Early releases and collaborators

A 2023 Indian Express retrospective described G Wagon as a duet with Gurlez Akhtar, produced by Deep Jandu. It identified So High, made with producer Byg Byrd and released in 2017, as an important breakthrough. The article also discussed the mixture of Punjabi and English in his writing and recalled the subsequent reach of his songs. The named vocalists and producers matter: recordings emerge through collaboration as well as the work of the person whose name appears most prominently. The retrospective combines reporting with the writer’s interpretation of the music’s appeal and the responses of people who worked with him.[2]

Public life and death

Moose Wala contested the Mansa seat in Punjab’s 2022 assembly election as a Congress candidate and lost, The Indian Express reported. His songs and public image also drew criticism over references to weapons and other subjects; the newspaper documented several disputes as well as his participation in the farmers’ protest. He was shot dead near Jawaharke in Mansa district on 29 May 2022. These events are distinct from the later investigation into his killing, which is outside the scope of this brief profile. His music and public life prompted different responses, including admiration and criticism.[3]
