The Lahore case
Sukhdev Thapar was an anti-colonial revolutionary associated with Punjab. An account published by the University of Delhi Archives places him among those convicted by a special tribunal in the Lahore Conspiracy Case. It dates the judgment to 7 October 1930 and the execution of Sukhdev, Bhagat Singh and Shivaram Rajguru to 23 March 1931. The university’s short account connects the Lahore proceedings with a wider history of revolutionary activity under British rule. The Delhi Assembly bombing and the Lahore case were related episodes but had distinct locations and proceedings; they should not be presented as one trial.[1]
Letters and case papers
The National Archives of India catalogue describes a collection of Lahore Conspiracy Case papers that includes proceedings, copies of the judgment and comments attributed to Sukhdev’s handwriting. It also lists three original letters from Borstal Jail, Lahore, including one addressed to his uncle Chint Ram Thapar, as well as copies of correspondence involving Gandhi. A catalogue description tells researchers what a collection says it holds; it is not a substitute for examining each item. The papers provide possible starting points for investigating Sukhdev’s views and relationships beyond the circumstances of his death.[2]
Execution and public memory
The Tribune’s retrospective reproduces an image of its front page from 25 March 1931 reporting the executions at Lahore Central Jail. Its later accompanying article identifies the three men and the date of their deaths. A newspaper report made close to an event and a later commemoration are different kinds of evidence: each has an audience and editorial context. Reading them with the tribunal papers and Sukhdev’s own letters can recover more than a single commemorative image. His life is part of a wider story of anti-colonial organisation, political violence, imprisonment and debates over independence.[3]
