Punjab and musical practice
Playback singer Sukhwinder Singh was born in Amritsar and completed his education in Jalandhar, The Tribune reported in a 2025 interview. Singh told the newspaper that he encountered music as a child and regarded learning as an ongoing part of his work. He described spending time with local artists while travelling and learning from making music with them. In the same conversation he spoke about the place of regular practice, or riyaaz, in his life. These are his reflections at the time of the interview; they offer a view of his working habits without attempting to document his entire education.[1]
A film song and its collaborators
A 2013 Daijiworld interview identifies Chaiyya Chaiyya as a song from Mani Ratnam’s 1998 film Dil Se. It credits the composition to A. R. Rahman, the lyrics to Gulzar and the duet to Sukhwinder Singh and Sapna Awasthi. The report was published after a concert in Kuwait and records Singh’s reflections on encountering different cultures while travelling. The credits are important because a film song brings together several kinds of work, including composition, lyrics and performance. The interview is a written source for those credits and the singer’s comments; the recording itself was not reviewed for this entry.[2]
Telling a story through song
In 2022 Singh spoke to The Indian Express about singing Bismil for Vishal Bhardwaj’s 2014 film Haider. He described the song as a ballad that tells a story and said its changing demands required a more considered approach than his usual manner of singing. The interview also recorded his response to seeing the sequence on screen and his appreciation for the opportunity Bhardwaj had given him. The newspaper notes that Singh received a National Film Award for the song. His description gives insight into his experience of the performance without claiming that the film or soundtrack was reviewed here.[3]
