Lahore and the move to film
Yash Chopra was born in Lahore in 1932, when the city was part of British India, and moved to India after Partition. An Indian Express obituary says he had considered engineering before entering filmmaking. In Bombay, now Mumbai, he worked as an assistant to I. S. Johar and then to his brother, producer-director B. R. Chopra. His directorial debut was Dhool Ka Phool in 1959. The obituary describes a career that began in different kinds of films before he became particularly associated with romantic cinema. Its outline connects his Lahore origins with a later career in the Hindi film industry.[1]
A producer and director
Yash Raj Films, the company associated with Chopra, maintains a profile and filmography of his work. It identifies Jab Tak Hai Jaan as his final film as director and names Shah Rukh Khan, Katrina Kaif and Anushka Sharma in its cast. A company profile is a useful source for credits, though its praise is an institutional perspective rather than an independent critical judgment. Chopra’s role as producer should be distinguished from directing: a film released by Yash Raj Films was not necessarily directed by him. Credits for each individual production help make that distinction clear.[2]
Themes beyond romance
Chopra’s films are often discussed through their romantic settings, but his filmography also includes crime drama and stories about family and society. An Indian Express retrospective discusses selected films and the actors who appeared in them, including Deewaar and its association with Amitabh Bachchan. Such films show the range of a director whose early work preceded the romantic productions most readily attached to his name. Film titles can be explored through their individual credits, plots and contemporary reception; a single genre label cannot fully describe a career that spanned more than five decades.[3]
