City and cantonment

Ambala is in present-day Haryana, India, and was part of the Punjab administrative region before the 1966 reorganisation. A census handbook distinguishes Ambala City, the district headquarters, from Ambala Cantonment to its south-east. It dates the establishment of the cantonment to 1843 and describes it as an important railway junction. A city and a cantonment have related histories, but they are not interchangeable in older records. The handbook also gives several explanations of the city’s name; such accounts are traditions and hypotheses rather than a single established origin. Its description reflects the period of the census.[1]

Changing district boundaries

A 1971 census report identifies Ambala as one of the districts of Haryana after the new state was formed on 1 November 1966. It says the district’s boundaries changed during reorganisation, including the transfer of Rupnagar and much of Kharar to Punjab. A district with the same name in two censuses may therefore cover different territory. Comparing historical population or land figures requires the boundary and date of each record, not simply the district name. These changes also show that historical connections with Punjab do not alter Ambala’s present position in Haryana.[2]

Road and rail connections

The colonial Ambala district gazetteer records the opening of a railway to Kalka in 1891 and the Kalka–Simla line in 1903. Railway connections linked the plains and the hill station of Simla, now Shimla, and made Ambala an important point in a wider transport network. A gazetteer was compiled by colonial officials for administrative purposes; its categories and judgments should be read critically alongside other evidence. The movement of passengers and goods depended on workers, traders and residents as well as railway authorities. The line’s history is part of the region’s economic and social history, not just an engineering chronology.[3]
