Banga: town, district records and Khatkar Kalan

Banga in its district

Banga is a town and administrative subdivision in Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar district of Indian Punjab. The district administration lists Banga alongside Balachaur and Nawanshahr in its administrative setup. A subdivision, a town and the surrounding villages are not identical areas, so their populations and services should be described with the relevant boundary and date. The district was created in 1995 from parts of Hoshiarpur and Jalandhar districts, according to its official profile. Older records may therefore place the same settlement within a different administrative district.[1][4]

Khatkar Kalan and Bhagat Singh

Khatkar Kalan, near Banga, is associated with the family of Bhagat Singh and other participants in the anti-colonial movement. The district’s heritage page locates the old Bhagat Singh museum approximately four kilometres from Banga and also identifies an ancestral home. Khatkar Kalan and Banga are distinct places, even though the village is connected to Banga in district records. The museum and family home offer ways to explore commemoration and local history; their exhibitions present selected objects and interpretations that can be considered alongside archives and published biographies.[2]

Using local records

The 2001 district census handbook describes villages, towns and facilities in the former Nawanshahr district and identifies Khatkar Kalan with the Banga community-development block. Such a handbook can help trace administrative geography, transport, amenities and land use at a specific census date. It cannot establish that a listed facility or administrative boundary is unchanged today. Reading records together, with their dates and geographic units, is more informative than transferring a figure or place name from one boundary to another. The handbook is a historical snapshot of the district as it was recorded in that census.[3]

The district administration separately lists service centres in Banga subdivision, including one at Khatkar Kalan. The directory is a dated public listing; services may change.[5]
