Barnala and Ala Singh
Barnala is a town in Punjab, India, whose history is closely connected with the rise of Ala Singh and the polity that became Patiala State. The 2011 Patiala district census handbook says Ala Singh rebuilt Barnala in 1722 and made it his residence. It also describes fighting outside the town in 1732 as his power grew. This official account offers a starting point for understanding the political setting, although a narrative centred on rulers and battles tells only part of a town’s history. Residents, traders, farmers and religious communities also shaped the place over time.[1]
Quilla Mahal and local memory
The Barnala district tourism account connects the area called Quilla Mahal with a fort attributed to Ala Singh in the early eighteenth century. It says the fort no longer survives, while the area retains old buildings and bazaars. This distinction matters: a surviving place name can preserve an association with a structure even where that structure has disappeared. The district also describes Dera Baba Gandha Singh, a historic gurdwara, through a local account of the establishment of a religious congregation. Its account is useful evidence of local memory; architectural and archival research would be needed to establish the detailed chronology.[2]
A district in modern Punjab
Barnala’s administrative status has changed more than once. The district administration records earlier periods as a headquarters and as a subdivision, and dates the creation of the modern district to 19 November 2006. The modern district was carved from Sangrur. Earlier records using the name Barnala may therefore refer to units with different territories and powers. The district’s historical account also links the area to the Praja Mandal movement and the commemoration of Sewa Singh Thikriwala at Thikriwal village. Political mobilisation and local commemoration add another dimension to the history of the town and surrounding area.[3]
