Rampura and Phul
Rampura Phul is a town in Bathinda district, Punjab, India. The district census handbook describes it as the combined town of Rampura and Phul and records its role as a tehsil and subdivision headquarters. It says the area was formerly in Barnala district of PEPSU and was transferred to Bathinda district in 1954. The handbook also gives accounts of the older origins of the two settlements. Those accounts deserve comparison with other evidence, especially where precise dates or relationships are in question. The combined town’s history includes both settlement histories and later changes in administrative boundaries.[1]
A railway and trading centre
The 1971 census handbook places Rampura Phul on the Ambala–Bathinda railway line and describes it as a foodgrain market and a centre for distributing tea to other markets. It also records road links and civic conditions at the time. Trade depended on cultivators, merchants, transport workers and labourers as well as the railway itself. The handbook’s description is a historical snapshot, not a current assessment of transport services, businesses or sanitation. Local newspapers, market records and family histories can help trace how trade changed after the census and how people experienced those changes in their daily work.[2]
Town and urban agglomeration
The 2001 census catalogue lists a Rampura Phul urban agglomeration and distinguishes the municipal town with its outgrowth. An outgrowth is treated separately in the census classification, even when it is connected to the town’s urban area. The municipality, the agglomeration and the surrounding tehsil should therefore not be assumed to have identical boundaries or populations. Researchers comparing the town across years need to check the definition used in each table. The catalogue identifies the available census units; maps, local records and later data can help establish how the urban area developed after the 2001 count.[3]
The 2011 census counted 48,450 people in Rampura Phul Municipal Council. Its separate municipal-plus-outgrowth row records 51,023; the larger figure covers a different unit and should not be substituted for the municipality.[4]
