A town in Majha
Batala is a town in Gurdaspur district in Punjab’s Majha region. The Institute for Machine Tools Technology in Batala describes its role supporting regional machine-tool and engineering businesses. Workshops and manufacturing are one part of the town’s identity; religious sites, markets and older buildings provide other ways into its history. The institute’s account describes its own work, rather than providing a census of all factories or workers. Batala’s location within Gurdaspur district also provides a reminder to distinguish the history of the town itself from histories of the wider district.[1]
Guru Nanak and Batala
Batala is important to Sikh traditions surrounding the marriage of Guru Nanak and Mata Sulakhni. The Gurdaspur district administration describes Gurdwara Sri Kandh Sahib as a place associated with the marriage. It is a living site of devotion and remembrance; an account of a shrine’s association should be distinguished from independent evidence establishing the exact appearance of the town at the time.[2]
The district’s account of local fairs also names Gurdwara Dera Sahib and Kandh Sahib in connection with the marriage and describes an annual commemoration. These public observances keep the association active, while accounts of the event can differ in their dating and details.[4]
Reading the town through a survey
A census town survey from 1971 draws on an earlier Gurdaspur district gazetteer when discussing Batala’s historical development. It describes a tank and tomb associated with Shamsher Khan and also mentions the development of bazaars and shops under later Mughal rule. The survey is a historical document in its own right: its language and judgments reflect its time and should be read critically. Its use of a gazetteer also means that it is not an independent eyewitness to the early events it recounts. Together with surviving buildings and other records, it can help readers investigate the changing urban landscape.[3]
