A district headquarters
Gurdaspur is a city in Punjab, India, between the Beas and Ravi river systems. It is a district headquarters and shares its name with the surrounding district. The district administration identifies nearby Kalanaur, Dinanagar and Behrampur among places of historical interest. These are separate towns, and an event at one should not automatically be assigned to Gurdaspur city. The administration’s page also reports figures from the 2011 census for the district; those figures should not be mistaken for the population of the city alone or for a current count. Maps and official boundaries help make the distinction clear.[1]
A local account of origins
The district’s history attributes the founding and naming of Gurdaspur to Guriya Ji in the early seventeenth century. It describes the purchase of land and a settlement that grew around the site. This is a local administrative account of the town’s origin, and its details can be compared with gazetteers, land records and other historical sources. The same district history ranges over events in many places, including Kalanaur and Batala. Those wider accounts illuminate the region but do not necessarily establish what happened within the present city. Local histories often combine remembered traditions and documented events.[2]
District boundaries and Partition
A Government of India industrial profile notes that the pre-Partition district had four tehsils: Gurdaspur, Batala, Pathankot and Shakargarh. It records Shakargarh’s inclusion in Pakistan after the 1947 Partition. Partition also brought violence and displacement across Punjab; an administrative boundary description cannot capture the experiences of families who lived through it. Later administrative changes further altered the area called Gurdaspur district. A historical table or map therefore needs a date and a clear geographical scope before it can be compared with a modern one. The city’s story forms part of this larger history without standing for every locality in the district.[3]
