A watercourse through Ludhiana

Budha Nullah, also spelled Buddha Nallah, is a watercourse that passes through Ludhiana in Indian Punjab and drains towards the Sutlej. A 2011 court record describes the watercourse receiving domestic and industrial effluent from the city. The name can appear with several spellings in official records, which matters when searching maps and documents. Its condition and character differ along its course: a statement about a sample at one point should not automatically be applied to every location. The waterway’s history is tied to urban development, drainage and the communities living and working around it.[1]

Multiple sources of pollution

A report submitted by the Punjab Pollution Control Board to the National Green Tribunal identifies domestic, industrial and commercial effluent and dairy waste among the pollution challenges facing Budha Nullah. These are distinct sources that may require different treatment and enforcement. The report records an assessment at a particular time; it should not be presented as a complete account of every discharge or current condition. The presence of industry is part of the watercourse’s history, but untreated sewage and other waste also matter. Understanding a specific site requires dated sampling and information about where the water entered the drain.[2]

Treatment and accountability

An audit report by the Comptroller and Auditor General of India identified weaknesses in pollution control and treatment arrangements affecting Budha Nullah and the Sutlej. Its findings concern the period and projects audited, rather than proving the status of every treatment plant today. Plans, budgets, monitoring results and independent observations can be read together to assess whether an intervention worked. Residents’ accounts can add evidence about smell, flooding and daily use that laboratory samples alone do not describe. A reliable history should distinguish a proposed cleanup, its completion and measured improvements in water quality.[3]
