The town in its setting

Chishtian is a town and tehsil in Bahawalnagar district, Punjab, Pakistan. The municipal committee places the city on the Bahawalnagar–Bahawalpur highway and describes the Sutlej to the north and Cholistan to the south. Its geographic summary offers a starting point for locating the town between riverine and desert landscapes. Those broad directions do not describe every part of the much larger tehsil, which includes rural settlements as well as the urban centre. District and municipal boundaries should be checked against the relevant map for a particular period.[1]

Chishtian Municipal Committee: 192,403 people in 2023; 149,424 in 2017.[2]

The 1951 table lists 10,270 in Chistian Municipality; changes in the municipal boundaries over that longer period have not been established here.[3]

Farms and markets

A World Bank irrigation and drainage project document identifies Chishtian as one of the main centres where farm inputs and produce were marketed in the project area. The same report discusses sugar mills at Chishtian and Bahawalnagar and the handling of wheat, paddy and cotton through different channels. Its evidence reflects the early 1990s and the project’s defined area; it should not be treated as a current directory of mills or a complete account of agricultural labour. It does show the value of reading a town’s history alongside the rural networks that supported and used its markets.[4]

Reading administrative records

The district government lists Chishtian among five tehsils in Bahawalnagar. The municipal committee’s own page includes a separate figure for its urban union councils and a larger figure for the tehsil. Because the page does not clearly date those figures, the dated census tables above provide a more transparent basis for the counts quoted here. Neither source on its own tells the whole story of the town’s neighbourhoods, shrines or residents. Local archives, oral histories and contemporary maps can add detail while showing how boundaries and names have changed over time.[1][5]
